Cargo vessel Madares collided with the old Halkis bridge at Halkida, Evia, at around 12:45 am (Greek local time) on Friday, May 13. At the time of the incident the cargo vessel, transporting coal, was en route from Aliveri, Evia, to Volos on mainland Greece. Damages occurred to both the bridge and the vessel, however all eight crew members were unharmed.
The captain, aged 57, is in custody while an investigation is underway. The Madares is anchored north of the bridge while the video of the crash is doing the rounds on the internet.
